Planet Eco has joined a six-month Girls’ Art Club programme aimed at creating a safe and inspiring space where teenage girls can explore their creativity, express themselves freely, build confidence and develop new skills.
The programme, which brings together ten teenage girls from the Wasa community, holds monthly sessions at the Centre for Arts and Creative Talent in Maitama, Abuja, and will run until January.
The first session served as an introductory and bonding session and was facilitated by Miss Phoebe Hunyemen of Planet Eco. The session focused on getting the girls comfortable with one another, encouraging self-expression and helping them understand that the art club is a space where their ideas, creativity and voices are valued.
Through simple and interactive activities, the girls had the opportunity to introduce themselves, talk about their interests and expectations, share their ideas and participate in creative exercises. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with the girls actively participating and showing genuine excitement throughout the session.
Creating With the Girls, Not Just For Them
A key part of the session was encouraging the girls to contribute ideas on what they would like to learn, create and experience during the programme. Planet Eco believes that young people should not simply be recipients of programmes designed for them, but should also have the opportunity to participate in shaping those experiences.
Going forward, Planet Eco will work closely with the organisers to develop a series of engaging activities that reflect the girls’ interests while promoting creativity, teamwork, confidence, leadership, self-expression and community engagement. The girls’ suggestions from the introductory session will also help inform future activities, with their ideas providing inspiration for some of the projects and creative sessions to come.
For Planet Eco, the partnership represents an opportunity to use creativity and youth-focused engagement as tools for positive development while giving young girls a platform to discover their abilities, build confidence and connect with one another. As the six-month programme continues, Planet Eco looks forward to creating memorable experiences with the girls and supporting them as they learn, create, express themselves and grow.
