Young girls participating in the Girls’ Art Club in Abuja have explored the creative possibilities of recycling and upcycling, transforming discarded bottles into colourful decorative pieces as part of an interactive arts and environmental awareness session.
The session, held on Saturday, August 29, at the Centre for Arts and Creative Talent (C-Fact), Maitama, was part of the ongoing six-month Girls’ Art Club programme, a collaborative initiative between UYSDA NGO and C-Fact aimed at encouraging creativity, confidence, self-expression and personal development among young girls.
Planet Eco FM participated in the session through Miss Phoebe Hunyemen, who facilitated the environmental and creative upcycling component of the programme.
From Waste to Something Beautiful
The girls were introduced to the concept of upcycling the practice of creatively reusing materials that might otherwise be thrown away and transforming them into something useful or aesthetically valuable.
Having been asked to bring old bottles from home, the participants used paint and their imagination to redesign the bottles into colourful decorative pieces, including flower vases and other items that could be used to beautify homes, offices and other spaces.
The activity provided a simple and practical way of helping the girls understand that environmental responsibility does not always have to involve complicated solutions. Everyday items that are often regarded as waste can, with creativity, be given a new purpose.
The girls enthusiastically participated in the painting exercise, experimenting with colours, patterns and designs while proudly displaying their finished creations.
Learning Beyond the Canvas
The session also built on the previous month’s storytelling activity, during which the girls were encouraged to write and present their own stories.
As the girls read their stories aloud during the session, facilitators identified opportunities to further support their reading ability, confidence, public speaking and overcoming stage fright. These areas will continue to receive attention as the programme progresses.
The broader programme is designed to give the girls opportunities to develop not only their artistic abilities but also important personal and social skills that can support them in their everyday lives.
Building Environmental Awareness Through Creativity
For Planet Eco FM, the partnership provides an opportunity to introduce environmental awareness to young people in a way that is practical, relatable and enjoyable.
Rather than approaching climate and environmental issues only through formal lessons, Planet Eco FM is using creative activities such as upcycling to demonstrate how individual choices and everyday actions can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
The Girls’ Art Club will continue with monthly sessions, with different creative and developmental activities planned throughout the six-month programme.

The colourful bottles created during Saturday’s session were more than works of art they served as a reminder that with creativity, what we consider waste can become something valuable again.
